Your sightings needed to understand and protect our large marine animals. Share them on MegMaLS (Mega Marine Life in Singapore).

Please share live sighting, stranding, or carcass observations of any large marine animals. Includes dolphins, dugongs, large fishes, rays, sharks, turtles, whales, and wedgefishes. It takes less than 10 minutes to complete the report. Your valuable observation will help scientists learn more about these animals and identify ways to protect them.

100k Coral Initiative plus new coral facility at St John's Island

100k Corals Initiative announced: to plant corals in Singapore over the next 10 years and beyond. A new facility at Marine Park Outreach and Education Centre, St. John's Island will grow corals for this effort. Corals will be cultivated by coral restoration experts and researchers from the National University of Singapore at the St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory. 

A training programme will also be developed by NParks, St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory and Friends of Marine Park for citizen science monitoring of the transplanted corals. Volunteers will be trained to assist with coral husbandry and underwater monitoring techniques. More details of volunteer training opportunities will be shared when ready.

You can visit the St John's Island facility by joining the guided tour of St John's Island held on the first Sunday of every month. Or do a self-guided tour with the Trail Guide - free for download from the NParks website.

Mass coral spawning 2021

Singapore's corals are alive and very sexy too. Their annual orgy of explosive sex just happened! Thanks to the dedicated team who have been keeping an eye on this event every year, and Vincent Choo and Toh Chay Hoon, we get a glimpse of what happened. 

Last year, coral spawning period was in the middle of COVID lockdown, so we didn't get a glimpse of what happened. Thus it's a relief to know that they Did It again this year.

Learn about rhino rays: guitarfishes and wedgefishes. Find out how Singapore can play an international role in protecting these fascinating but endangered fishes.

October 8th is International Octopus Day! It's no secret why this date has been chosen to celebrate the octopuses - one of the best known marine animal for its intelligence. To celebrate this day, we would like to share an article penned by Megan Ng, a budding marine enthusiast who loves to illustrate!

About the author: Megan is currently a third year Life Sciences major with a minor in Aquatic Biology and Forensic Science at the National University of Singapore. Her passion for the ocean started when she was a young girl, as she was always very curious about nature especially marine life. Megan is a strong believer about conservation and tries to find ways to help our planet. She is writing for Celebrating Singapore Shores to spread the word about our marine life and conservation to the public through popular science writing!

But all is not lost, as you will find that YOU have the power to be the change sea turtles need.
