Celebrate Earth Day on Singapore shores!

Next week is Earth Day with the theme "End Plastic Pollution". The Earth Day website has more info on how you can end plastic pollution as an individual, organisation and educator.
This Earth Day weekend, there's lots happening on Singapore shores! Clean up plastics from a shore at Lim Chu Kang, watch a free movie about marine plastics at the Botanic Gardens, rescue horseshoe crabs at Kranji, get muddy at Sungei Buloh, join shore walks at Chek Jawa and the Sisters Islands Marine Park, explore the heritage of Pulau Ubin or kayak to St John's Island.


21 Apr (Sat): A Singapore Botanic Gardens Movie: “A Plastic Ocean”
FREE. A Plastic Ocean documents the newest science, proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues, and eventually consumed by us. Join us for this thought-provoking and powerful documentary. Be aware and together, we can make a difference.
Time: 7.30pm - 9.15pm

21 Apr (Sat): Youth for Our Ocean: Marine Clean Up with FRANK by OCBC
Specially for youths! In celebration of 2018 International Year of the Reef and Earth Day, FRANK by OCBC x Our Singapore Reefswants you to join us in our upcoming marine clean up dive! This time, we are calling for passionate youths! Grab your friends and join us to discover what marine animals live among the seawall and help save Lazarus Island from marine trash and plastic waste!

21 Apr (Sat) and 22 Apr (Sun): Chek Jawa intertidal walk
Join the NParks volunteers for a tour to discover and learn about Chek Jawa's six ecosystems and the diverse array of animals that inhabits these unique habitats. Journey through the Chek Jawa Visitor Centre, 1.1km long boardwalk, Jejawi viewing tower and sandbar with experienced guides. Open to all ages, children under the age of 13 to be under parental/guardian guidance.

21 Apr (Sat): Sisters Islands Marine Park intertidal walk
FREE. The intertidal area at Sisters’ Islands Marine Park is most suitable for visiting during low tides of 0.4 metres and below. This is when you will be able to see the shore teeming with marine life as the area will be submerged under water at higher tides. Nature guides will be on hand to bring you on a tour to experience the Marine Park’s amazing biodiversity. More details and registration on the NParks website.

The mud at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a key habitat for the plants and animals. This unique habitat is full of surprises! Get close and personal to the mud and observe the rich biodiversity; critical to the ecosystem at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Join us for an interesting free guided walk featuring our lesser known creatures of the mudflats in Sungei Buloh.

21 Apr (Sat): Ubin Rustic Reflections Tour
This tour takes approximately 2 hours. It starts at the Assembly Area before proceeding to the former Bin Kiang School site. You will then head over to the Sensory Trail pond to learn about the habitat restoration efforts before making stops at Pulau Ubin’s former headman’s house and Kampung Melayu. Tour participants will also visit a rubber plantation that once supplied Singapore, and possibly the region, with latex, and learn more about the different plants that played a major role in shaping this country’s culinary delights at the Ubin Fruit Orchard before ending the tour at Teck Seng’s Place – a restored Chinese kampung house. For all ages, children under the age of 13 to be under parental/guardian guidance.

21 Apr (Sat): Kampong Tour at Pulau Ubin
Take a walk with us to experience Ubin's wonderful natural and cultural heritage. The 2.2km trail takes about 2 hours to complete. The tour will start at the Ubin-HSBC Volunteer Hub and take you through the spice trees around Jelutong campsite, Butterfly Hill, Pekan Quarry, Sensory Trail Ponds, Kampong House, Old Bin Kiang School site, Toa Pek Kong Temple and end at the Wayang Stage. You will hear about the use of spices in cooking and the interesting history of the different sites. Do you know what the Ubin-HSBC Volunteer Hub was in the 1970s? When was the Toa Pek Kong Temple built? If you would like to know, then this is an excellent introduction to the heritage of the island. For all ages, children under the age of 13 to be under parental/guardian guidance.

22 Apr (Sun): Horseshoe Crab Rescue and Research Programme
Horseshoe crabs (HSC) are in decline globally due to habitat loss, poaching and over shing. They get trapped in abandoned nets and need our help to free them. NSS monitors our HSC population to ensure that they stay around for generations to come. Join us in this mission to rescue and study the HSC at Mandai Mudflats.

22 Apr (Sat): Kayak to St John's Island with Kayakasia
Suitable for beginners, head for the beautiful St John’s island with old growth trees and an even older history. Once this island was the largest quarantine center in the world. On this easy and relaxing paddle, visit the parkland of St John’s islands go on a short nature hike to the Sisters' Island Public Gallery and swim in its clear waters. Get to also see Pulau Tekukor, St John's almost forgotten neighbour, that is now home to sea eagles that soar our Southern shores!
